Up Close And Personal
When Our Timing Is Off

So what's on your mind today?  Is it worth your time?  Stuart Briscoe has written a book, Time Bandits, that gives insight as to how to spend the minutes of our day.  He speaks of how his life was at one time; "Each day there were things I knew that I had to do~no question.  Then there were things I thought I really ought to do, plus things that I desperately wanted to do.  Added to that were the things I imagined other people expected me to do and yet more things that others insisted I do.  And so on! "
Can you relate to Mr. Briscoe's dilemma?  Our lives are truly jam packed full of "things".  Mr. Briscoe called some of the unnecessary things clogging up our life, time bandits.    We each have to examine our life to see what is taking these golden little nuggets from us. Minutes don't have the capacity to reproduce. That's why it's important to think about this seriously.  Below I've listed some things I see as very sneaky little thieves of our time and energy.  Consider them.

  • Living in the past:  Do you often say, "I wish I had done this or that" or "I wish I could go back."  The past is something you can't change,  but you can loose the future by dwelling on it.  We all have regrets.  We have to accept that fact.  Our only retaliation is to make better choices in the future.  It takes a firm decision to make a change. Only we can do that for our self
  • Family problems:  We can spend hours on end discussing situations that we need to change, accept or let go. Time is too valuable to re-hash old scenarios forever.  Relationships need to be mended if at all possible. If not, with kindness, bow out and let time do its work.
  • Criticizing and judging~ What a sneaky little thief this can be! This is a total time waster!  Neither of these traits will change a situation.  While knee deep in this exhausting activity,  we  end up with less time to do what is really important.
  • Negative thinking~ This thief not only steals our time, but changes  our outlook on life  in a dramatic way. Negative thoughts can affect our physical health, and take away  our hope for the future.  It's big time serious!  I dare you to Goggle physical and mental effects of negative attitudes.

These are only a few things that can slip up on us and steal the smile from our face and minutes from our day, minutes that, once gone, will never return.  I love what author Loretta LaRoche says:

"We have a very short  time on this planet, and we waste so many hours not really enjoying what time we have.  So many of us seem to be waiting, waiting... Have you ever asked yourself:  "What am I waiting for?"   Or, "Who am I waiting to get permission from?"  Believe me, no one is coming to give you permission - they're out having a good time."

Make your decisions with good forethought and earnestness.  Enjoy the moments instead of dreading them.  Don't  identify them as ordinary.  They are precious.  Salute them, use them up for good!
