Up Close And Personal

WHAT A MIND!

Gary Collins, one of my favorite authors, wrote a few years back about the way our mind works for us.    He stated that a new kind of medicine, a more hands on type,  was making its appearance.  We see this new wave of medicine now in the forms of  Wellness Centers all over the country. Traditional medicine does its best to rid people of disease and physical symptoms. Newer kinds of treatment  attempt to help people who are bored with life, drained and unfulfilled.   This help is being rendered  as "high level wellness which includes not only taking care of  the physical body, but using your mind constructively, expressing your emotions effectively, and being creatively involved with those around you.

Dr. Collins states in his book, Your Magnificent Mind, " In clinics throughout the country, doctors teach people  how to control stress, get over harmful habits, develop more realistic life goals, and learn how to take care of their bodies.  Working with the assumption that one's lifestyle is a crucial factor in sickness and health, the wellness doctors help people change attitudes and the way they live.   Stated simply, the new medicine is helping people to change their bodies and improve their health, by changing their ways of thinking.  While some have criticized this new approach,  it rests on an old and proven principle:  One good way to change your body is to change your mind. "

Evidence mounts everyday that our attitude, which originates in our mind, can make fantastic strides in improving our overall well being.   The problem is in our having a choice to make it happen.  There is no one standing over us demanding, " You will think positive thoughts about your health,  your family, your job, your future!"    We each decide for ourself.  Therein lies our problem.

Learning new ways of thinking does not fit well in our age of haste.  We want it now!   But another old and proven principle is:  Some things are worth waiting for!  Just this week I heard a great definition for the word diligence:  "Doing a little thing for a long time until something big happens."  That's how you finished 12 years of school.  That's how some become engineers, doctors, lawyers, teachers, etc.  It takes giving of our time each day, sometimes doing irritating "stuff" and giving up personal time to reach a goal that is nowhere in site when you start.

If you're stressed to the max, tired, worried, financially drained or just sick of life, give it another chance by rethinking how you think.  Our mind can be our best friend or our worse enemy.

"There are no constraints on the human mind, no walls around the human spirit, no barriers to our progress except those we ourselves erect."
Ronald Reagan, President
