IT'S A MIND THING
The Power of Words
According to many experts who have spent years studying the mind, we are told our mind initially accepts everything it hears. It is most responsive to our own voice. Knowing this helps me to understand why self talk is so important. The words we hear and the words we say to ourselves have tremendous power.
Although our own voice is the greatest influence on our mind, other people in our life also have power over us. This is a reason to scrutinize the people we spend time with. Writer Raymond Lemke, in his book, Yes You Can, says, "I am scared of a negative person because I know that if I let that negative data into my mind, it's going to start to work, influencing me." |
Can you remember times you have gone to work, looking forward to a great day, when all of the sudden you walk in and a co-worker is down on their luck, having marital problems, etc., and all of the sudden your sunshine is under a cloud. Les Brown, a wonderful motivational speaker and writer calls these people "toxic"
We must be extremely conscious at all times of the input into our mind. IF you were aware there was a recorder picking up everything in your office, at home, in your social circle, you would be alert to every word be said, knowing it was being recorded. The fact is, you do have a voice activated computer right between your ears. It goes everywhere you go.We put multiple files on our computer to protect against viruses and spam. Our minds are much more important. We must filter out what is said in our presence and observe our own self talk.
Where do we get so much negativism? Well meaning friends can have a devastating affect on us by saying things like, I hate my husband, men are just no good!" Watch out for statements like this. Before you realize it, your mind can be changed about your own good marriage.
The news reporters can make you feel the world is falling apart. Yes, there is tragedy across our land. When we can help personally, that's good. When we can't, do we even need to know about it? Movies, soap operas, music are excellent examples of material that goes into our mind everyday, negative words about marriage, friends, lifestyles.
I shudder to think what all the lyrics of songs are doing to the minds of our young people. Does it have anything to do with the anger, lifestyle and mindset of our youth today? Of course it does!
It is imperative that we also be extremely careful of what comes out of our mouth to others, particularly our own children! We can make or break them by the very words we speak. What power we have is such a little thing, the tongue.(See THAT'S LIFE for the poem, WORDS.)
