Soul Matters
Telling It Like It Is
A few mornings ago, my husband and I decided we would check out a little hot spot we had heard about called Fat Mama's. We had heard they served the best tamales east of the Mississippi. This dish does not show up on our list of health foods. But we agreed an occasional indulgence wouldn't make or break us. The trip would be an all day affair, as it was almost one hundred miles away. We didn't mind as there were other sights in this southern town that Richard wanted to explore. I quickly checked our email as we headed out the door. I got excited as I saw a posting of an Estate Sale starting that very morning. Best of all, it was less than ten miles out of our way. Richard agreed to the detour and we were off!
The day was beautiful, lots of sunshine and we smiled as we started our fun trip of being with each other without interruption. Soon we arrived at a beautiful home that had every nook and cranny filled with things that make life comfortable. We moved from room to room. As we looked, I was reminded of how temporary life is. All the material things in this home were needed for a while, but only for a while. I paused to think of my "stuff". My books, my favorite chair, the most comfortable bed in the world; these things are special to me. I wondered about the family that had lived in this home.
Next stop, the Mississippi River. It truly looked like the Mighty Mississippi on this day. And it was setting the mood of the day as people relaxed, taking in Spring Time.
Finally it was time to check out Fat Mama's. The crowd made it obvious that we had made a good choice. Fresh chips with salsa, mouth-watering tamales with cheese and chili. Why do we sometimes forget to take time for unwinding, laughing and enjoying simple things in life.
The day was good. The river town shared its life with us. We saw the big plantation homes, we met the people and shared their food. As the day slowed down, we started toward home thinking about our experiences.
Late in the afternoon, about half way home, we saw a long line of cars on the side of the highway ahead of us. We guessed there had been an accident ahead. Moving closer, we could see the cars were parked by a cemetery. The setting was somber, people moving slowly. I had never seen a funeral taking place this time of day. My mind went back to our early morning visit to the Estate Sale. Again, I was reminded that death is a part of living.
We can enjoy the fun times in life. We can get excited at the birth of a baby. We can buy our homes, our cars, our 'stuff'. In fact, the Scriptures tell us, "I have come that you might have life and have it more abundantly." (John 10:10) But this life is not all there is. Have you thought about it? Once you have chosen who you will worship, and we all worship someone or something, you have made life's greatest decision. If you are wondering what I am talking about, check out Faith Check below.
