Someone To Watch Over Me

A very old song, "Someone To Watch Over Me",  came to my mind as I sat in the quietness of the morning. My early morning routine consists of a two mile walk,  followed by a shower and some quiet time on the patio with my husband, as we enjoy our morning latte'  and our bible study.  This morning the birds at our feeders and the early morning breeze was a little softer, the birds sang sweeter.

Life has not been easy  this year.  I can remember saying to my husband on New Year's Day, "This is going to be a good year!"  Little did I know the sadness that would be mixed in with the "good".  My oldest son, an attorney in Seattle died  suddenly of a  heart ailment in February, days before I was to visit with him. Our lives stood still for a while, not believing this had happened. (See my story, My Little Boy, The Man in this section) Four weeks after this tragedy my mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and passed away less than two weeks after  diagnosis.  Suddenly sadness was the unexpected theme of the year.

This morning, as I sat taking in the beauty of the flowers, smelling the herbs  and watching the birds feed,  I felt my husband's hand on my shoulder.  Again I was made aware of how good God is. He understands our humanness.  He understands our sadness at loosing those so close to us. Since my mother's funeral six weeks ago,  it's as though He has been walking with us, holding our hand.  He is busy sending us soothing "little" things that  make our life comfortable, things He doesn't have to bother with, but He does because He loves us.  As we thank Him in the midst of our sorrow, joy has started to return.  We find ourselves thanking Him for the birds and flowers, for our two new pets (that you will hear more about another day), for my husband's new golfing partner and other life pleasures.

Life happens and life is good. It is a gift.  We loose, we gain. We have mountain tops and valleys.  But after the  valleys, God provides a resting time for us to  relax and remember who He is.  He is the lover of our souls.  He cares.  He doesn't make the bad things happen. But He uses them to mature us for deeper walks with Him.. He wants to be our oasis in the storms of life. What more could a person ask? How thankful I am to have "Someone To Watch Over Me."

"How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God!
How vast is the sum of them!
If I should count them, they would outnumber the sand."
Psalm 139:17-18...
