Your Boots Were Made For Walking
There's never been a better time to be alive! We can make a choice of whether we want to accentuate the negatives in life or go with the positive. There's plenty of both in our society! Let's stay on the positive side and let me tell you of new studies that have been done on the aging process.
A new study was done on Alzheimer's disease and was reported recently in the Journal of the American Medical Association. It seems that walking regularly can help keep the mind sharp and ward off the dreaded Alzheimer's disease. The study showed that what is good for the heart is also good for the brain. The good news here is that the activity does not have to be exceedingly streneous.
According to the American Medical Association, "A study of 16,466 female nurses ages 70 to 81 found that even women who walked a leisurely 1½ hours a week did better on tests of mental function than less active women."
Another study: "involving 2,257 retired men ages 71 to 93, found that those who walked less than a quarter-mile a day were almost twice as likely to develop Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia as men who walked more than two miles daily."
Jennifer Weuve, a Harvard School of Public Health researcher who led the nurses study commented, "We were a bit surprised that something so modest as walking would be associated with apparent cognitive benefits."
Most people connect mental exercise such as crossword puzzles, reading, etc to reduced risk of Alzheimer's and cognitive decline. The new research tells us there is one more way to ward off mental decline as we age.
So what are we waiting for? Now is the time to look to the future. If we don't form good habits now, someone else will have to make decisions for us later. Now that should be enough to make us brave the weather or purchase equipment to rid our self of excuses regardless of the weather! Loosing weight will be a fantastic extra! We can do it. It will take determination. But goal setting always has its rewards!
