Coffee Across The Table

From time to time I have to take inventory of just where I am as a wife and mother.  Isn't it funny, or perhaps sad, that no matter how we try, we just don't do it right all the time.   Why is it so easy to let important moments slip away while we tend to busyness of the day?  How easy it is to get our priorities tangled up.

Fortunately, life is forgiving most of the time and we have second chances.  But we never know when that second chance will be taken from us. It happens all the time.  It has happened in my life recently, with the loss of a friend, and then again the last few days with the sudden loss of a relative.   It's been happening since the beginning of time, yet we are always unprepared. We wished we could have known the future, so we could have enjoyed the days  to a greater degree.

These realizations prompted the poem I wrote below.  I penned this poem as a reminder of my husband's often invitation to have coffee with him and how important those times are.

COFFEE ACROSS THE TABLE
By Antje Hill

"Got a minute?" my husband questioned.
"I'd like coffee across the table with you."
My mind throbbed with what women call crises.
My first thougth: "Husband, find something to do!"

But that was when I lacked wisdom.
Time has taught me well where good lies.
It's not in how pretty my floors are.
Time has taught me how quickly it flies.

So yes, Husband, I'll have coffee 'cross the table.
Let's steal a few minutes away.
We have no promise of tomorrow.
We'll enjoy our moments today.

"When someone invites you to get coffee, it isn't becaues they're thirsty.
It might be because they're cold, but more likely
it is because they want to spend time with you."
