It's A Matter Of Choice

On a laid back Saturday afternoon, my husband and I made our way in and out of antique stores in the area.  We liked the atmosphere, unhurried and quiet.

We were finishing up our last store when Richard walked up to me.  In his hand he held a small chameleon.   He concluded that at some point in time this little creature had entered the door with unsuspecting customers.

“We have to get this little one outside to safe ground where it can find food and family,” he said, walking toward the door.

This was not the first time Richard had taken a little chameleon out of harm’s way to a safer place.  He loves to hold them in his hand and stroke them, until they close their eyes, as if asleep. On the dark floors, the tiny creature was brown.  But I knew on a bed of grass, it would turn green to blend into nature with its God given camouflage. It would be safe from the threatening environment.

This little reptile was a prime example of what we are not to be.  As children of God, we are not given camouflage gear.  We are to be totally  visible.  We are to shine, to radiate, to draw others to us in order to point them to Christ.

Without the power of the Holy Spirit, it is likely that we will be intimidated by life around us.  We may find it much more comfortable to blend in.   But just as this little chameleon would have eventually died because of its environment, Christians doing their own thing, dry up by blending in.  Like the chameleon, we have to be very careful what doors we enter.  We make choices everyday to listen or not to listen to God's voice, to enter or not in gossip, improper places for Christians, arguments with our spouse, depression, back biting. Unlike chameleons, we have a mind to reason. And our choices have consequences.

The chameleon was hardly noticeable as it slithered out of Richard’s hand onto the patch of grass. God had taken a part of His world on just an ordinary day in my life to expose the importance of daily choices.  These choices define our character and show tell-tale signs of who we really are.
